The Pros And Cons Of The Extra Wide Baby Gate Types
Baby proofing your place could be challenging, then, when you realize that you need an extra wide baby gate it seems to become much more frustrating.
A lot of of us now have open plan living. This would usually result in openings and archways between spaces which are wider compared to a standard doorway. If you are making an effort to baby proof then this might be a little bit tricky to deal with.
You pretty much have three possible choices for an extra wide baby gate. The first is altering a standard gate. Many manufacturers have now acknowledged the need for extra wide baby gates, however they don't want to have to create and test a new product, so the easy option is to improve a current product. The way this has been achieved is to have panels that can be added to either side of the typical gate so that it is going to fit a larger area.
This structure is however a little bit flawed. When the gate is open you have limited your opening to the equivalent of a common door. This is not a big problem, but it can be intrusive and may not exactly add to the decor of your own home.
The second kind of gate available from retailers is a roll back gate. This looks like a roller blind that is fitted on its side. The advantage of this style is that the when the gate is not needed it could be rolled back and will not be in the way. The downside of this design is that it is not as effortless and easy to open.
The final option which you have is to find a carpenter to make you a bespoke gate. This could seem like the ideal solution, but there are some parents who have tried this and discovered that it was a bad investment decision. A bespoke extra wide baby gate will be quite expensive. The biggest issue however, is the design and style. If this is your first child, then you are likely to still be on the learning curve of child proofing, so to make this large an investment and then realise that there is a huge flaw in your design will be quite frustrating.
Unfortunately there is no simple or obvious solution for an extra wide baby gate. A good way to decide which will best fit you is to discuss to other parents and see what their experiences are of the different types available.
The other significant thing to have in mind is that an extra wide baby gate is there to protect the baby, but it is the adults who have to use it. If you choose a gate which is difficult for you to use you are more likely to get lapse in closing it and then you defeat the purpose of having a gate at all.
